Students of II MBA (Batch 2017-19) KCT Business School completed their Social Immersion Project, SIP 2019 as part of their course. 180 students of 30 teams connected with 18 NGO’s and worked on 15 different types of projects benefiting 3305 beneficiaries in villages around Coimbatore city.
SIP opens student to a wealth of networking opportunities, allowing them to build new relationships within their community as they contribute, students can meet new people, work with new organizations, and strengthen their ties to the community. SIP allows students to take what they’ve learned and apply it beyond the classroom. This offers the opportunity for enrichment and a great way for them to see how concepts they’ve learned work in the real world. Taking part in socially relevant projects teaches students valuable skills like ability to follow instructions, teamwork, problem solving, networking etc. Social Immersion project was carried out during the IV semester (Feb – Mar 2019). The students were asked to choose a location where they want to serve the community which is in need of a communal solution. Students were instructed to choose an area within 30km radius from Coimbatore city. Students were divided into teams of 6 members. Each team was associated with an NGO in their relevant area and a faculty guide was allocated to each team for ensuring the success of the project. The NGO partners for Social Immersion Project 2019 were Immayam Welfare Association, G 18 charitable trust, UUU foundation, Ver Organization, Chinnavedampatti Lake Restoration Association, Rotary Club of Coimbatore, COODU Organization, Care T, Sigaram Foundation, Aram Foundation, Ashiwariam Social Welfare, Enaindha Karangal, No Food Waste, Universal Peace foundation, Vidhai NGO, Malarum Jeevan, Tinkle Sevaa for girls, Rammasamy Chinnammal Trust.
Teams carried out projects on UN themes on Sustainable Development Goals like Good Health and Wellbeing, Decent work and Economic growth, Life on Land, No Poverty, Gender Equality, Clean water and sanitation, Zero Hunger, Climate change, Industry Innovation and Infrastructure. By associating with 18 NGO partners the 17th theme of UN goal “Partnerships for the Goals” were also achieved.
Project carried out by different teams include Solid waste segregation, Women empowerment through skill development, Preparation and promotion of organic fertilizers , Say no to plastic, Water restoration in lakes, Making seed balls and awareness creation about green environment, Promotion of biodegradable bags, Cloth bag manufacturing, Plantation of sapling for greener environment, Training the villagers on kitchen garden, Organic farming, Food donation campaign and identifying NGO requiring food, Road safety awareness, To provide better environment by vaccinating street dogs and cats against rabies diseases, Setting up of vegetable garden, Awareness and opening up of Government schemes to the public.
Social Immersion Project 2019 was highly successful, as student teams were able to serve more number of beneficiaries with sustainable project ideas, the learning for the students were also enormous, which they shared during their viva-voce.
