As a part of MoU with Roots Industries Ltd., a 4 Day Lean Certification Course was organized for II MBA students (Batch 2017-19) for those specializing in Operations discipline from August 27-30, 2018. Concepts on Lean Manufacturing were taught during the first two days followed by practical sessions at Roots Industries. Mr.K.S.Raguram – DGM Corporate Quality Management and Mr. Sampath Kumar, Head-Training were the key resource persons for the course.
The session started with various concepts of Lean that included Value Added & Non-Value added Activities, 7 types of wastes, the basis of 5S and Kaizen identification & Methodology. Later, the resource person explained the various Lean Tools such as TAKT Time, JIT, JIDOKA, HEIJUNKA, POKA YOKE, Value Stream Mapping, Push Vs Pull Production, and Design of Experiments. During the sessions at Roots Industries, the use of simulation technique for an assembly of horns was demonstrated and students were made to practice, to understand the various flows of production and its pros and cons. The resource person briefed about the benefits of streamlined production flow and how to improve productivity. Trial runs were performed and results were obtained. The speaker also demonstrated various production flows and how to interpret results. The session was very useful for the students and created a real time experience on the importance lean manufacturing practices. The students also visited various departments of the manufacturing plant. During the final session, student took an assessment test to pass the course. 37 students participated in the certification course. The program was coordinated by Dr. S.
