180 Students of KCT Business School were engaged in Social action projects on the UN Sustainable Development Goal themes in the SS Kulam block of Coimbatore during November 19 – 26, 2016 and impacted around 3000 people through investing 7200 man-hours on specific projects.
KCT Business School places a high emphasis on innovative curriculum design to advance the students knowledge, skills and values. The main objective of the Social Immersion project is to sensitize students on civic and community issues, to enhance their interpersonal skills and work as a team, to understand the problems of marginalized community and enhance their status through capacity building. The theme of Social Immersion Project, 2016 was drawn from UN’s Sustainable Development Goals to transform our World.
180 First year students of KCT Business School carried out socially relevant, impactful projects during November 19 – 26, 2016. The SS Kulam Block Development Officer Mr.Sridhar, was invited to for a orientation session. Partnering NGO’s also shared their ideas for implementing the planned projects. The program was coordinated by SIP Coordinator, Deepa M, Assistant Professor and the SIP team.
The students first identified project needs in SS Kulam Block which includes Kallipalayam, Vellamadai, Athipalayam, Kondayampalayam, Vellanapatti, AS Kulam and SS Kulam. Six member teams joined hands with NGO’s to carry out the projects. Students carried out projects on UN Sustainable Development Goals themes and the projects included Self Employment opportunities for Home makers – Food & handicrafts; setting up nurseries, Creating access to banking and insurance services, Education and enrollment in Central Govt social upliftment projects, Soil health card – Soil Testing, advising on crop growth and Implementation of hydrogel Technology, testing the PH value of water and suggest farming solutions, Renovation of children park , Establishment of vermicompost pits – and avoidance of Chemical fertilizers, Rain water harvesting pits, Establishing Library & Lab in Government High school and Installation of Bio water Purifier through frugal innovation
30 students were engaged in the Project C2D (Cash to Digital) with an objective of creating awareness about digital transactions among the men and women in small businesses in the areas in and around Coimbatore city and guide them to move to mobile wallets. At the end of the project week, the students had engaged with 1400 small business owners and 610 small business owners switched from cash transactions to e-wallets. The businesses included bakeries, pharmaceuticals, hotels, hardware shops, groceries, textile shops, Xerox shops, browsing centres, street vendors, tailor shops, pet shops, fancy stores and ticketing agencies.
Every batch of MBA students from KCT Business School for the past 4 years have been involved in Social Immersion Project, a part of the curriculum with a focus on impacting the society, which is a credited course. Social Immersion Project helps students to be better citizens by knowing, understanding and finding sustainable solutions for pressing community needs. They also learn and practice their management skills for building a better community.
Students worked in 6 villages in 25 teams, partnered by 20 NGO’s. 5 teams have taken up a special project –Project C2D (Cash to Digital) – Digitization of small businesses to enhance their sales under the current scenario. 1440 small businesses were contacted, 610 have been impacted, by implementing payment through PayTM Digital Wallet. Students started working on the ideas about a month and a half back and several discussions, iterations were done on the project themes based on the visits to the villages and interacting with the village spokesperson. All preparatory work was completed and BDO of SS Kulam along with partnering NGOs. Students are in the field from November 19 – 24, 2016 carrying out the projects.This project carries 3 credits and 40 hours of field work and 20 hours of preparatory work.
These projects will not only give a social perspective to the students but also build the managerial skills – planning, interpersonal, selling, financial and entrepreneurial skills
